I got to eat at Wai Ying again with Aissa and her sister May when we did our Visita Iglesia. The first time I tried Wai Ying was also my first Visita Iglesia, and also with Aissa way back in 2009.
To get to Wai Ying from Ongpin (from the Manila-Beijing Friendship Bridge), turn right on Salazar Street then turn right again on the first corner, which is Benavidez Street, on the right side of which is where Wai Ying Fastfood is located.

The cold blast of airconditioning was a welcome treat as we walked in from the humid summer heat. Wai Ying has two airconditioned floors, although the dining place can be quite narrow. If you're looking for ambiance, what you'll be getting is an authentic, no-bones about it Chinese dimsum/"short order" eatery. This is Binondo, the heart of Manila Chinatown, and no doubt about it, this is as authentic down-to-earth Chinese as you can get.
As you can see from the menu shots below (click to enlarge), the prices are really cheap.
But even with the cheap prices, you won't get cheap quality. In fact, Wai Ying really has good, dimsum and Chinese food :)
Lemon Chicken
Fish Fillet
Radish cake (P55)
Yang Chow fried rice

Next to Wai Ying, there's a stall selling fried siopao at P25 each and they're also a must-try!
Other food treats during our Visita Iglesia in Binondo:
Streetside watermelons
Suman (rice cake)

Aissa and May also introduced me to another bakery in the area, Salazar Bakery, which has really good packed goodies and breads, perfect for pasalubong :)
Oh my goodness, that food looks amazing! I just ate dinner, but I think I'm hungry again. Looks like you had a great time. :)

Yup, food was cheap and great :) Thanks for dropping by Stephanie :)
ReplyDeleteyour blog is very interesting & educational. i live in the US and plan to visit in October. i will def try the afternoon tea at Shang in Makati. I remember the Salazar bakery and glad they are still there. My husband said it's not a very safe place. If we go with a local driver, i told him it should be okay.
ReplyDeleteAntonio's in Tagaytay seems like a very nice place, too. i first saw some pictures in my brother-in-law's FB.
Can you recommend a good place for lechon de leche?
thanks.
Hi, thanks for the appreciation :) Read my post on Antonio's (and the other Antonio's restaurants) over in my travel blog: http://www.sunsetgoddesstravels.com/2011/09/gone-for-weekend-antonios.html
DeleteOngpin area is relatively safe. I have been there numerous times and was never pickpocketed, even during the "busy" times like Visita Iglesia, as long as you're careful with your belongings/purse. It's not like you'll get mugged right off the street or whatever :) But if you have a driver, then yes, it's still better to bring one, if only to make it more convenient for you to go around or find your destinations :)
For your question on lechon de leche, try Cirkulo Restaurant's Cochinillo Asado (http://www.munchpunch.com/1630/cirkulo-restaurant-pasay-rd/menu) and if you have the time to visit Cebu, look for the brand "Cebu Lechon de Leche". Hope that helps.
Hello and thank you for your advice esp on the lechon de leche. My husband and I have been craving for this.
DeleteIs Via Mare still considered a good place to go? I remember going to the one in the greenbelt area.
Grace Sin Remolona
Hi Grace! Via Mare is always a good place for good old comfort Filipino food (love their Vigan longganisa), Filipino desserts (bibingka!) and also their oysters. Via Mare in Greenbelt is still alive, although you may also want to consider the other restaurants that have sprouted in the area, like in Greenbelt 5. :) Another area that has a lot of foodie places now is in Serendra/ Bonifacio High Street/ BGC Central :)
