Post-Digital Perm Hair Care Guide

THINKING OF HAVING YOUR STRAIGHT HAIR PERMED? READ THIS FIRST BEFORE GETTING A DIGI PERM!!
A few weeks ago, I got my hair permed for the very first time at Bang's Tony and Jackey and told you all about my (virgin) digital perm experience in this post.

As I mentioned there, the main thing that I felt after leaving the salon and a few days after was disoriented.  After living with straight hair for all my life up until that point, I felt confused and a bit lost on what to do with my hair. And while still in that disoriented state, I sort of panicked, which led me to buy products that I realized only later on were not really what I needed.  I did ask a lot of questions from my Korean stylist, Anna,  but I felt like it's a hit or miss---as in, you have to ask the right questions or else you won't get the proper information. So the thing is, what questions are you supposed to ask?

And I noticed that while there are so many articles and blog posts on other girls' experiences on their digi perms, there aren't that many that tell us formerly straight-haired girls about what to expect and what to do with our newly permed hair AFTER we leave the salon and deal with it in our daily lives. After all, we already paid so much for the perm itself and risked taking this step to the world of waves and curls. So we might as well enjoy this new hair and be sure to maintain it properly.

So I came up with this guide, which is a compilation of my own experience and tips from other real women who've had their hair digi permed.  You will also find my essential shopping list for digi permed hair (because I don't want you to go through what I did---panicking and overbuying!).

Before & after leaving the salon

Each perm is different, depending on the treatment that was used, and could differ from salon to salon. Your stylist may also be so busy and/or take for granted that it's your first time and don't know anything about dealing with permed hair. So before you leave your chair with your newly permed hair, be sure to ask your hair stylist the following questions because this can differ from each salon, stylist, and type of perm:
  • How long  can you expect the perm to last?
  • When is the earliest you can wash your hair?
  • When can you tie up your hair again?
  • Can you style your hair using curling iron?
  • When can you have your hair colored/ retouched?
  • When can you have your hair permed again?
Right after leaving the salon, take note that you SHOULD NOT WASH YOUR HAIR until after 24 to 48 hours have passed since your perm.  I got my perm Saturday afternoon and I was told that I'm supposed to wash my hair Monday at the earliest.  Take note of this instruction because it's supposedly during this time that the treatment that makes your hair perm "sets" and settles in your hair and it's imperative that this process is not literally "watered down" by you wetting
your hair.  Or else, the waves/curls may lose effectiveness and will fail.  Take a bath using a shower cap to prevent any water from damaging your perm.

Knowing this, do make sure that you take a bath and wash your hair before going to the salon and if you're iffy about leaving the house without washing your hair (like me!), make sure you don't have anywhere special to go to the day after your perm that will necessitate you washing your hair.

I also asked whether I can tie up my hair in a ponytail, which was a concern since I got a perm in the middle of a very hot summer.  Good thing I asked because I was told that I can only tie up my hair 1 month after my perm.

I should mention that your permed hair upon leaving the salon will be quite different from how it will look like after you wash it.  And in fact, it's only days after that the "real look" of your digi perm will come out.  I loved how my hair looked when I left the salon but I think I really got to appreciate what I did to my hair only after a few days into the perm.  That said, if you're not too happy about how your hair looks right after your perm, don't panic! Give it a few days before judging for yourself whether you love it or hate it.

Washing

Permed hair may be shampooed frequently and for best effect, it's important that it's conditioned regularly.  Some women with permed hair say that it's best not to shampoo hair daily.  On the other hand, daily conditioning is a must for permed hair (as opposed to when I had straight hair, where daily conditioning had the effect of weighing down my hair).  Excessive shampooing might affect how long the perm will last, and daily conditioning is important to prevent frizzy curls.

As for me, I alternate between daily shampoo + conditioner and using just conditioner.  I use Clairol Herbal Essences Totally Twisted Curls and Waves shampoo and conditioner.  I tried using "ordinary" shampoo and conditioner on my permed hair and I noticed that my hair became dry.  But the effect of Herbal Essences is really different.  Permed hair needs more moisture than non-treated hair and I could really feel how Herbal Essences makes my hair softer and more moisturized.  This is an imported shampoo but is available at SM Supermarkets and Watson's but I got mine at Unimart Supermarket (and good thing too because it's priced at P215 each, which is about P50 cheaper than in SM).  Plus, this smells super great too.  I highly recommend this product, as this is one of my best "curly hair girl" finds :) I also still use my Pureology shampoo (seen here), to care for my colored hair but at the same time, it still gives enough moisture for my permed hair.

Others recommend using dry shampoo to add volume without actually washing your hair, but I haven't tried this yet.
 .
As an alternative, I also use Human Nature's shampoo and conditioner (make sure it's the moisturizing variant) for days when I feel detoxifying.
.
It's also good to have a weekly intensive conditioning treatment regimen.  This is supposedly a must even with straight hair and now with permed hair, this is all the more imperative. I just use whatever I already have in my house (like Sunsilk and Pantene).

Since you will no longer be combing and brushing your permed hair,  special attention must also be given to your scalp to prevent dandruff and product build-up. I recommend clarifying or anti-dandruff shampoos every once in a while.  Good thing I also already have Giga's Scalp Treatment, which is a specific treatment for the scalp.

Styling

I think it was only after I first washed my hair and had to deal with the new texture and styled it myself that I realized that having digi permed hair is really different from having straight hair.  So many girls with digi permed hair have told me that they love it because it's low maintenance (like they don't need to comb it anymore).  Yes, on one hand, that is true.  However, having digi permed hair takes a different kind of maintenance altogether.  I found my straight hair quite low maintenance in the sense that I can just sit in front of the electric fan to dry my hair and that's it.  I rarely used any product and had no need to blow dry my hair.  But now, I find that the products and the different steps that I have to undergo to care for my permed hair took some getting used to. So because of that, having permed hair needs more "maintenance" for me, but I think it's only because I've had straight hair all my life.

1. Drying.
Never ever rub your towel on your hair as this will only create frizz. For straight hair, I used to rub the towel on my scalp and hair.  But this is a no-no for permed hair.  It's enough that you squeeze excess water out and then wrap your hair in a towel and give it time to absorb the hair's moisture.

My stylist told me that if I'm going to use blowdryer, it has to be on the cool setting.  I got the impression that she disapproves using a blowdryer altogether as this will just cause more damage to my hair.  However some girls say it's good to use blow-dryer to dry permed hair. This is good to prevent frizz but make sure you put the correct styling products first (see #3 below) and do not do this often to prevent heat damage.  I invested in a Baby Liss travel hair dryer because it has a cool setting and I must say that my permed really looks at its best when dried this way (especially now that I'm towards 3 months into my perm).

What I've also found ideal for drying my hair is to leave the aircon open while I'm getting ready in the morning since there is enough air in the room to dry my hair but without any direct wind that will give me frizz. I've also tried drying my hair through an electric fan, but I make sure that it's not pointed directly at my head to prevent frizz.

2. NEVER EVER COMB YOUR PERMED HAIR
This is the most important rule in caring and maintaining your permed hair.  While straight hair needs to be combed when wet to prevent frizz, the effect is exactly the opposite for your curls.  Combing them will just loosen the curls and make them frizzy.  Except for combing the top part of my hair which has not been permed, I never comb my permed hair.  While your hair is permed, say goodbye for now to your combs and brushes.

To deal with tangles and knots, comb through your curls using your fingers while in the shower or afterwards, while they're still damp.  Another trick is to finger comb your hair BEFORE you shampoo to prevent tangles.

3. Sectioning
One thing that I've learned is an absolute must to properly style my digi permed hair is dividing my hair into sections while still damp. What I like most about having digi permed hair is how I can manipulate it to look different everyday, and I do this by changing how I section my hair.

If I like to maintain the smaller tighter curls, I section my hair into four.  Then I wind each partition around my finger then apply product.  If I want looser but still defined waves, I part my hair into two and twist them around then apply product.  If I want a messier look, I don't section at all and just allow the curls to dry naturally.

4. Styling Products
.
After I got my perm at Tony and Jackey, I asked the stylist what products I need to use for my new hair.  They hoisted two products at me, the Natubea Cortex Essence hair serum (P1300) and the Teracota Hair Silky Essence (P1800). Both are Korean products and are supposedly only available at Tony and Jackey. I asked if I can just get one and the stylist told me that my hair is dry, I have to get not only the Natubea hair serum (which is the product to style & define the curls) but also the Teracota product to lessen the dry and damaged appearance of my permed hair.

After my perm, I learned from a friend (who previously had a perm at Azta Urban salon) that her go-to product when she still had her perm was the Kerastase Nutritive Oleo-Curl curl definition creme  (I got mine at the Basement Salon in Shangri-La at about P1652).  And I must say that I love, love this product.  And if there's just one product that you must use for your permed hair, this is it.
.
As I said above, I didn't do my post-perm hair care research on time and I panicked and bought too many products (the Korean styling products, the Kerastase, a mousse, other shampoo and conditioners, and even rollers!).  But now knowing what I know, I would just recommend the Kerastase curl definition cream and perhaps also the Teracota hair silky essence (which I apply not just to my curls but also to the remaining straight hair on top of my head.  The good thing also is that I can still use this when I go back to my straight hair).

I apply the Kerastase oleo-curl cream (just a small amount will do) to my sectioned and twisted hair while still damp, applying it from the ends upward, crimping as I go.  Unlike mousse or gel which leaves hair dry, sticky, or hard, the Kerastase cream leaves hair still very soft---literally, as if I didn't apply any product at all when my hair is dry! And yet, it still gives my curls definition and style. And I don't need to reapply throughout the day. I don't need the hold of a mousse since I want my curls to look loose and wavy anyway so this is simply perfect. I've read about some remarking on the product's scent but I like the citrusy strawberry fragrance and do not have any problem with it. If I want to reapply the product in the afternoon  or if I have to go somewhere after work, I find that it gives a great "retouch" but does not weigh my curls down.

I did my research online and learned  girls who got their hair digi permed are indeed raving about this product. And now, I am too. It's really the best product that anyone with digi permed hair can and SHOULD use.  At P1,652, it is very pricey but this product can last for months and for the great reviews and quality, I'd still say this is a good deal.  I figured, I've already spent so much on having my hair permed and if it takes an expensive product to maintain it and for me to be happy with it, then panindigan na

On the other side of the price spectrum, I've read about Monea curl defining milk lotion which is priced only at P99.  However, I've noticed that the reviews are mixed (downside is the thick consistency).  Anyway, when I no longer have any money since I already spent so much for my perm and its maintenance, I would definitely look for this milk lotion! Others also swear by styling products from Gatsby and Bench Fix.

5.Crimping
Throughout the day, crimp and twist your permed hair frequently to further define the curls/waves and to put some order into them when they get too messy for your taste.  This will also make the curls retain their shape. Since you can no longer brush or comb your hair, do this instead.

6. Hair Accessories
As I said before, I love my digi permed hair for the volume and because to me it looks sexy and  has a just-out-of-bed feel ;-).  But for the days when you don't want to look too wild or unkempt, you can use headbands or small clips to get your hair out of your face and to look neater.

It seems that there are differing opinions on whether digi permed hair can be ponytailed.  My stylist warned me not to do it until after one month from my perm. And even then, my stylist told me not to use elastic bands because they can cause more hair damage.  Instead, I should tie my hair up using large clamps.  Frankly, I've actually violated the no-ponytail rule once or twice already when I just had to get a half-bath in the evenings because of the summer heat (but I didn't want to get my hair wet so I just clamped it up).  Thankfully, I don't think it damaged my perm in any way. But still, I would keep such violations to a minimum to retain the shape and quality of the curls. Since each perm is different, be sure to ask your stylist about this rule.

Coloring & Salon Treatments

While it is safe to color your hair after you have it digi permed, I'd suggest waiting about a month or more just to give your hair some time to rest in between treatments.

They say that digi permed hair should also receive extra care with monthly salon treatments, especially those formulated to give more moisture and damage repair.  I balk at the "monthly" frequency of having hair treatments so I'd rather stick to my weekly intensive/deep conditioning regimen at home.  One good alternative I've been hearing right from the salon stylists themselves is to buy intensive conditioning treatments (like Kerastase) being sold in the salons (which are exactly what they use in their salon services anyway) and apply the treatment DIY.  A jar of a Kerastase treatment may cost you upward of P2,000 but that can last you for months, while that's just the price of one salon treatment.

 ------o-------
After the disorientation with my new hair which lasted for a few days after I had my digi perm, I'm now at the stage where I've really come to appreciate and love it. I think the disorientation was really because I've had straight hair all my life and that most of the things I have to do with my permed hair are "new" to me and are in fact, "counter-intuitive" to how I've dealt with straight hair (like daily conditioning, not combing, not drying hair in front of the electric fan, etc.).  Permed hair just takes some time getting used to.  But once you get the hang of properly washing, styling and caring for your hair, you will get to enjoy the "low maintenance" side to having digi permed hair---like not worrying if every strand is in place, and getting volume and definition without the use of hair dryers or curling irons.   And of course, you can now enjoy the advantage of having beautiful curls and waves---a totally sexy, different look  from your sleek, straight hair.

For girls with newly digi permed hair, I hope this guide helps lessen your disorientation and make you enjoy your hair more :) And for those girls out there who are thinking of getting a digi perm, I hope this guide helps you in making your decision too.

If you have your own tip or advice, please share them here! Cheers! :)

I have naturally wavy hair, and I also alternate between shampoo+conditioner and conditioner alone. Will have to check if Kerastase Oleo Curl also works for naturally wavy hair.

  4. I personally went from straight hair to permed hair and had a similar experience of buying all kinds of products during the first week of my perm out of fear that my hair would uncurl. Needless to say, I am not using most of the products now. :(

    1. That is so true! Yes, you described it right---that the panic buying was out of fear that the curls will straighten. I hoarded too but in fact, there were only a few products that I really needed. Every straight-haired girl who's thinking of getting a perm SHOULD research well first on how to take care of her digi perm before taking that big leap to avoid panic buying : )

  5. Hi! Is it ok to have my hair dyed first before gettting it permed?

    1. Yup. My hair was already colored and highlighted when I had my perm. But I'm not sure it's a good idea to do BOTH color and perm in one salon visit (apparently, it IS possible based on comment of mnel below). A good rule of thumb is to wait at least one month after you have your hair colored before you have it permed so that there's enough time in between treatments for your hair to "breathe" and recover. And in between, it's also good to have intensive/deep conditioning treatments (even those done at home are good enough) :)

  6. Went straight to google to look for ways to maintain my newly-digipermed hair and got here. Thanks a lot! Now, I know what to look for tomorrow when I drop by the mall. Like you, I just went from straight to curly and spent a leg to have this hair. Panindigan na nga! Haha. I also had my hair colored on the same day prior to the digiperm 'coz my stylist, Sora told me it's okay. I still don't know what to expect in the next few days. Scary. Haha. Thanks again!

  8. Thanks for the the tip!

I did my digital perm end of August last year. I asked the stylist (she is Chinese or Korean I think) about the special care for my hair after the treatment and she just said not to comb it, just normal shampoo and conditioner! (you were in a hit n miss then??? Now I realise that my stylist is totally clueless!!!)Then they convinced me to buy this hair styling product which gives me scalp irritation. So I showered after less than 48 hours, used the same anti dandruff shampoo (because I have very oily scalp so I am very prone to dandruff)which I am using until now, just changed the conditioner specially for curly hair, combed my hair to prevent tangles while conditioning, and used styling mousse for curly hair like my friends suggested. And to top it all, I did not do any deep conditioning treatments for fear that the curl will not last if I did.

Now that summer has started, my curls are starting to go down. And I am thinking its because I have naturally straight hair before and it is now coming to the end of my backbone when i stretch it( so im thinking HEAVY!) and the stylist had a hard time curling my hair because she worked on a virgin hair when she did the perm, and blah blah blah etc. Bur now I relised.... OMG I did it all wrong!!!!

But I enjoyed my digital permed hair so much, I wanna do it again maybe next month!!! I think its more than enough time in between treatments, the ends are a little dry now but I need to have it trimmed anyways....

Now I am being a good girl and researching what I can about how to care for digital permed hair, and your blog was the most useful of all!!!

    Again, thanks a lot!!!

    2. Thanks a lot for this. I did exactly the wrong things as the one above ---- that is, combing my hair. After two months, my hair seems to have lost its curls and has gone very dry. But with your tips above, I know now what to do as I intend to have my permed her "re-touched", if there is such a term.

Thanks for sharing your experience and tips. I find them very useful.

    1. Hi Anon! I just checked today in SM Megamall Supermarket---they have the Herbal Essences Totally Twisted shampoo in stock (the supermarket nearer to the department store, Megamall B). However, there's no conditioner in stock. I will check in Unimart and will let you know.

    2. A good alternative to the Totally Twisted variant is Clairol Herbal Essences' Hello Hydration (light blue color) as this is their moisturizing variant, which is basically what you should look for in your shampoo and conditioner. So if there are no more stocks of Totally Twisted, I would definitely get the pair of Hello Hydration :)

  13. Wow! You pretty much covered everything. Thank you very much! This post is very helpful. I should have read this before going to my salon. It's true that digitally permed hair needs more maintenance than rebonded hair. Anyway, I had my hair digitally permed last Saturday. After about an hour from the time I left the salon, I noticed some parts of my tresses becoming frizzy especially sa harap like walang ka-curl2x, just frizz. And although friends compliment my hair (cause it looks fine from afar), I couldn't miss the fact that it's reaaalllyyy dry with zero shine. It was rebonded a year ago and I had it colored a month before my perm. I expected it to be at least soft and bouncy. My gulay!!! Sana I just went for an ordinary perm sa tabi-tabi. I paid Php3,000 for it (it's half rebonded, half permed). I wish I have pictures to show you. I washed it this morning and I was really crossing my fingers na sana gumanda. But it's still frizzy so I applied Vitress (it's the only cream I found at home). It helped a little but some parts were really not curly. I've been stressed since the day I had it permed.:( So today I'm going back to the salon hoping they'd redo some parts.

So maybe for those wanting to get digital perm, first, know the condition of your hair. If it's damaged, opt for a rebond. Second, make sure your salon has a good reputation on digital perming. Different hair types get different results.

    1. Hi Karen! Thanks for sharing your experience here. May I know which salon you got your perm? For frizz, there are several good serums available in the market. I like the Terracota serum which I got after my perm in Tony and Jackey---it counteracts the tendency of my fine hair to get frizz. And for curl definition, I really swear by the Kerastase product I featured above :) Since my hair was colored, I was really afraid of doing more damage to my hair, that's why I chose the most expensive treatment. Good luck on your re-do and please update us :)

    3. I realized I was ranting during my last comment. Hihi

So I went to my salon last night (Korean Hair Salon Chin in Cebu). My stylist washed my hair and checked my curls. She told me my curls are still okay so no need for a re-do. After she styled it, my curls were soft and pretty na ulit. Nabunutan ako ng tinik. Thank God! whew! I just need to get myself a good cream/serum to avoid frizz and to maintain the curls. I will check the products you recommended. I found a dealer friend for Human Nature products. I here good reviews for Keratase, too. For the meantime, I'm using Sunsilk Shield & Frizz Control Light Cream. I got it out of desperation yesterday lunch time because I couldn't find any Lucido-L (recommended by a friend) around. I saw Monea Curl Defining Milk at Watson's but I was hesitant kasi I haven't read your post pa that time. Also, my stylist told me that I could spray my hair with water mixed with leave-on conditioner (cheap alternative) from time to time. I can't wait for my curls to loosen up. It kinda looks like Merida/ Hermione Granger's hair. I was expecting big bouncy curls. I'm crossing my fingers. Here's a pic of my big hair: http://tinyurl.com/873mf37 Thanks again for your post!:)

  17. I had my hair digipermed a few years ago at Mr. Shin's Beautybrick Salon along Jupiter Street, Makati. Like you, I've always had naturally straight hair. I find that the humid weather causes the curls to frizz and to get lanky.

I would recommend using John Freida's Frizz Ease Dream Curls. It's a spray-on and it's very light so it won't weigh down your hair. Just spray on damp hair and crimp with your hands. I find that really livens up the curls. Not sure where to buy it in the Philippines though. Check out S&R, Dollar Store and PX goods shops.

    1. I suggest you wait at least 2 to 3 months before having your hair digipermed. Think of it this way, a "drastic" treatment for your hair (whether it's rebonding or digiperming) results in inadvertently damaging your hair so it's always a good thing to wait some time in between treatments to give your hair time to recover. You can try going to the salon where you plan to have your hair digipermed & ask them about the specific time period, since it may also depend on the particular digiperm treatment that their salon provides (it could possibly vary from salon to salon). But again, if it were me, and they say I can have my hair digipermed after I just had a rebond, I would still wait for a few months before getting a digiperm. I hope that answers your query :)

  19. I'm so thankful i found your blog right before i had my hair digipermed last wednesday. With all the details from what to ask from the stylist and the care my hair needs after the procedure, it's very informative. I tried asking my stylist's opinion on how to care for my hair but i was not contented on his answers. I'll wash my hair tomorrow na and i already bought Clairol Herbal Essences Totally Twisted (Shampoo & Conditioner) since there were plenty of stock at PCX.
What's the best mousse/styling cream have you used that made your curly hair look neat and at the same time looking wet look all day?tia! :)

    1. You're welcome and thanks for showing your appreciation :) And thanks for sharing about the Totally Twisted stocks in PCX--will have to replenish my set soon. As for your styling cream question, personally, I don't like my curls having a wet look. I use Kerastase curl definition creme and I find that it gives my curls definition, but without the sticky & hard feel that I get from a mousse. If you want the wet look, I think the Monea curling lotion is ok. Gatsby also has cheaply priced products that will give your curls that wet look :)

    2. Hi! I've bought the Monea product first last Thursday and tried on my hair. It's sticky and it made my hair heavier. Then, I bought the Kerastase oleo curl leave on at David's Salon (P1,532) and i like the citrus smell plus my hair looked natural. Well, yesterday I was at Megamall and bought this hair gel that gives a wet-look for curly hair (as per the sales lady). I used it today but my objective is not met because my curly hair got swept by the fresh air while commuting along SLEX :( I'm still exploring other means in order to maintain neat curls. And my husband told me my newly permed hair looks good even without the wet look. But, I really could affirm the Herbal Essences Totally Twisted Shampoo & Conditioner and Kerastase oleo curl leave on products, they'll never fail us. Thanks much!

    3. Thanks for the feedback on the Monea lotion. Agree on the Kerastase product and the Totally Twisted range :) Cheers!

    4. Hi again!
Do you apply lots of conditioner on your hair? because i used the same principle of alternating shampoo+conditioner and conditioner alone. However, i've noticed two weeks after i had my hair permed,it looked dry. is it because of too much conditioner? (like palm-full, but not overflowing naman)or do i need to go for a treatment na? hope you can share again your experience :)

      Delete
    5. Are you using a moisturizing variant? Digipermed hair really has the tendency to be dry, so yes i suggest you do weekly intensive conditioning treatments. :)

      Delete
    6. Hi! I've been using the Totally Twisted variant. Maybe I should try the Hello Hydration variant this time. I tried the Giga Scalp treatment last monday and the following day my hair was so sticky (lol) I'm not sure if I followed the instructions correctly hehe. But maybe you had a different hair type that's why these products work well on you :) Thanks a lot for the help!

      Delete
    7. The Totally Twisted should be ok, but if your hair is still dry, you should really do weekly treatments and if money is no object, do salon treatments too. Or better yet, buy Kerastase treatment that you can do DIY at home :) hope that works!

  21. I love your post! It's very informative. May I ask, by the way, Can I use the Kerastase Nutritive Oleo-Curl curl definition creme even if my hair is not permed? My hair is naturally curly/wavy/buhaghag, so I normally just tie it. And I want to let my hair down as well, but it's too wavy. I haven't found a product that would really help me since I am not so much of a Perm/Rebond girl. Please let me know! Thanks! :D

  23. Hi, been reading your blog on how to take care of permed hair before I got may hair done just last Sunday, so tomorrow is my first day to wash it and it's scary how it would look like after, my curls are really nice after the treatment and I want to keep it that way so I researched more, read your write ups over and over and it's really helpful from the products to use, when to have it trimmed and color, complete with information. I'd like to try the HE totally twisted unfortunately they are so hard to find. Went to different stores in Glorietta from SM,Watsons, Landmark, even the supermarkets inside the mall and Mercury still no luck, I asked all the sales ladies and told me that it's out of stock! are all girls getting their hair permed :) and bought all the HE products haha... hope I can find one at Megamall.

Hi sis! your blog is very helpful .. i had my hair digi-permed last week at tony and jackey and I really don't have any idea on what products to use .. my friend who also has permed hair told me that she's using monea .. taking her advice, that's what i'm using right now .. it is really quite sticky .. i just can't say if it's a good product or not because this is the only product i've used so far.. I find Kerastase oleo curl quite pricey .. I'm planning to try the finesse mousse .. i'm just not sure which is better between monea and finesse?

    1. Thanks! I actually have tried the Finesse curl defining mousse and I find it ok naman. The monea seems to have mixed reviews---others find it sticky. The only drawback to Finesse is your hair might feel more "matigas" rather than if you're using Kerastase. I haven't tried Monea yet so I can't really compare the two. But if you don't like Monea, try the Finesse mouse. I have a friend who also did a digi perm with TOny and jackey and she's ok with using mousse everyday--she's happy with the curl definition it gives. And if you were to ask me, if I don't use Kerastase, I'd probably use mousse too. Hope this helps :)

  29. Thanks for all the information! I had just gotten my second digital perm after living 6 months with the first that didn't work out quite well (the curls lost their bounce and dropped to very faint waves after 1 wash and hair was extremely dry despite weekly treatments). I also never received after-care information from the first salon so I had to do a lot of research on my own. I didn't see this site back in April 2012. This time around, I went to another salon and they did it right! I'm so glad you provided us with such a detailed after-care guide. Just wondering if you have gotten your hair trimmed since your perm and whether that impacted the curls negatively.

For anyone from the New York City area reading this blog, I got my hair done at Wave 55 located on 2nd Avenue between 55 and 56 street. I should be ready for a trim in a couple of months and have been anxious about losing the perm so thanks for easing my fear!

  31. Among all the blogs I've read about digi perm, yours is really the best - most informative, complete and helpful. Especially for newbies. I was also offered the product by Tony & Jackey, but I didn't buy it at the time I was digipermed. I told myself, I had to check out what Sunset Goddess has to say first in her blogs. Because the night before I had the digiperm, I stumbled upon your blog and was able to read only the 1st part (not this post-perm blog). I didn't ask many questions from my hairstylist, because I had faith I'll find the answers in your blogs. The discovery (answer to my question in mind): I'll try the Kerastase oleo curl that you mentioned. For this, and for all the tips, THANK YOU SO MUCH SUNSET GODDESS! You're an angel!

  32. You're welcome! It feels much better knowing this feeling of disorientation is normal, and knowing it will get better after a few more days. 35. Hi, thanks for this post. I just got my hair permed last Sunday..(unplanned, since I went to salon just for a cellophane and a hair cut...and the curly thing is history....). the price is cheap and so I was convinced to do the curly thing instead of cellophane.I asked the stylist to just curled the lower porting of my hair (so if ever i don't like the result, i can easily cut them. :)). I left the salon without even asking a single thing (how to maintain, what to put, etc..). the day after tomorrow (last Monday), I washed and combed my hair ( i didn't know that 24-48hrs rule..hehe), I used MONEA curling milk lotion (but I put them after I combed and dry my hair....talagang walang alam)..so the results is kinda dry and its so frustrating. that day, I read your post, and so I got an idea what to do with the curls.... Tuesday, although I still used the cheap curling milk lotion, i cant believed that a lot of people are complimenting about how good my curly hair and they even asked me where did I get my hair permed. :)

Thanks to your post.. can now feel how good this curly thing is... :)

btw, i have a long straight hair before.

  37. hi, i just have a few questions:

    1. since you can't wash your hair 24-48 hours after the perm, did it get messy after waking up the next day? if yes, how did you deal with it? is it ok to twist the permed hair before the first wash? or i should just leave it as how the hairstylist made it?

    2. also, when is the best time to apply the curling lotion / serum? is it ok to apply it immediately after showering (after gently squeezing hair with towel)? or i have to wait at few minutes/hours (like it's almost dry) before i actually apply the product and do the scrunching and twirling?

    thanks for the help.

    -samantha

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. 1. No, it didn't get messy. There are salons that allow you to wash your hair BUT YOU CAN'T SHAMPOO. I guess it depends on the formulation/medicine used for your particular perm so be sure to ask your stylist. I don't think there's anything wrong with twisting permed hair before the first wash.

      2. You can apply serum either when hair is still wet (I applied Kerastase after squeezing water out from hair) or when it has just dried. I've tried both and curls were ok.

      Delete
  38. whoa thats lots of info. you mentioned that you alternate between daily shampoo + conditioner and using just conditioner... but you use styling products daily. if one uses styling products (gel/cream/wax) daily on permed hair, wouldn't it be akin to 'sealing those in' when you only use conditioner.... ?

hmm and will the curls loosen out faster if you don't put styling products right after you shower? (like if i shower at night, and rewet it the next morning then put styling products)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The purpose of alternating between shampoo+conditioner and just conditioner is so that your curls won't loosen as quickly as when you use shampoo everyday. And that will also eliminate frizz. The styling products will be washed away by the water before you condition.

You can apply styling products right after you shower, and no, it will not make the curls loosen out faster. Curls loosening out is a factor of combing them and washing them with shampoo frequently.

I hope this helps you with your digipermed hair, if you have it. Thanks.

    1. Hi Camille! If there's a month or more between getting your hair colored then having a digi perm, that's safe enough and I'm guessing your hair stylist will do the digi perm. I had my hair colored in late Feb then had it permed in April. But take note though that the perm might have a different look or effect based on your hair's "damage". And do note that getting it colored is a form of "damaging" your hair so be sure that after you have it colored, you do regular treatments(weekly or 2x in one week) hair treatments (even at-home treatments will do). If your hair is thick and healthy, then having your perm `1 month after your hair color shouldn't be a problem :) good luck!

    1. Hi Glaiza. Having digi permed hair is not truly wash and wear hair style. As detailed in this post, it does require maintenance and has to be "dried" properly so you get nice curls. If you want wash and wear hair, why don't you try doing a short bob or even a medium-length one? Good luck :)

  42. Hello Ms beautiful curly hair! I am so happy and being informed by your blog. Thank you so much for this! Anyway, I am planning to digi perm my hair one day, I'm just like you who have a very blessed straight hair and you're right about you said that "girls with curly hair wanted to have straight hair and girls with straight likes the opposite".. since my hair is still short (shoulder level), I am wondering if its okay or will not be upsetting if I digi perm my hair this short. Actually I am planning to perm my hair next year maybe January or February. I am not that in a hurry of perming my hair. Plus also I am looking for a better salon here in Dumaguete City that will take care and serve high quality service. I am thinking about the David salon here or maybe Artbox Salon (Korean Salon) but I don't know if its worth to pay thousands of pesos from one of the salons I mentioned because I haven't heard yet from them. I hope somebody will help me suggest a better salon in Dumaguete since there is no Tony and Jackey salon here in our place.
Note that the Human Nature Moisturizing shampoo & conditioner (Php44 for 50ml) is way more expensive than the Clairol herbal essences Php 215 for 355ml (100peso more expensive) so its not saving at all..
I hope somebody will advice me or suggest because I am totally confused right now on where is the right place to perm my hair.

Again! Thank you so much Sunset of Goddess!

    1. Hi Ellaine. Thank you for your comment. I would suggest that you wait it out for as long as you can before having your hair permed. As I've detailed in my post on my digital perm experience here, my only regret was that my hair was not that long. I had my hair permed again when it was longer and it definitely looked better. So as you said, since you're not in a hurry, better to wait it out first.

Good luck in finding the digi perm salon for you. I'm quite biased for Korean salons when it comes to digi perms. Korea it seems is the land of the digi perms and I would trust them for digi perm treatments :) Do let me know how it works out :)

    2. Hello again! Thank you for suggesting me that. yes I would definitely wait a little bit. And would probably try the Korean Salons.

I am just wondering why you didn't include your roots permed? Is that also possible to perm from roots to tips?

      Thanks!

      Delete
    3. Yes, you can perm higher up to your roots. But I didn't do that because I just want the loose waves look. The second time I had my hair digipermed, I made it higher because I wanted more volume. It really depends on the look you're going for. Good luck!

  46. Hi! Your post is very helpful :) I just have questions to ask if it's okay.
Is it necessary or advisable to apply mousse when the hair is still wet then blow dry it afterwards, EVERYDAY? Or blow drying ot everyday will just make my hair look really bad?
I'm just really hopeless with my hair cause I was so unsatisfied with what it looked like after perming it. It seemed like I just had it curled using a flat iron as what most people said when they saw my hair :( I went back to the salon where I had this permed but you wouldn't like the way they treated me if only i can just shareit So now I'm really having a problem. A month hasn't passed yet when I underwent perming but now the curls are getting loose. It's like I just wasted my money for nothing.

    1. I think mousse is better when applied on slightly damp hair, after you've blow dried. If you are going to use styling products everyday, it's very important to get weekly or twice weekly treatments, especially since mousse usually contains alcohol. Blow drying hair in the long run will of course result in heat damage to your hair so it's important to protect your hair for that as well.

I'm sorry to hear about what happened to your perm. Maybe your hair texture and the perm treatment that you got didn't exactly match. The rate of the perm loosening up will also depend on your perm treatment, the size of the curls, and how often you shampoo.

If you want, you can share your story here (salon, stylist, what happened) so that we can all learn a lesson from your experience. If there's enough time that passed from your first perm, maybe you can have it done again this time, with a better salon and treatment. Cheers!

    1. Hi Hirenne. As I said in the post, it's really a good idea to ask your stylist for specific instructions on what to do your hair in the first 24-48 hours after you've had your hair permed. I know of certain perms/ stylist where you can't wash your hair totally for the first 24 hours (like with my first perm in Tony & Jackey), while some will allow you to wash it but can't shampoo it. So if you still can, ask your stylist (see my tips above on what questions to ask your stylist). But if I were you, for the first 24 hours, I won't put any products just to preserve the perm, especially at its initial stages. As I've mentioned in the post, the first 24-48 hours of the perm is when your perm will "set" and so it's crucial to follow your stylist's instructions to the letter, and that's why it's important to ask the right questions before you head home from the salon after your perm :)

    1. Hi Nikki. It's important to find a good styling product to define your digipermed hair. Moisturizing shampoo and conditioner is good for keeping your hair moisturized but it won't help in styling and defining your hair. As discussed above, there are cheap options like Monea curling lotion (just P99 or perhaps just a little above P100) and Bench fix or Gatsby hair wax. Experiment and see what works for you. It doesn't have to be expensive.

  54. Hi Sunset of Goddess!
Before anything else, Happy New year to all especially to you Sunset of Goddess! This is Ellaine again! I just got my hair permed yesterday afternoon at the Korean Salon! And you were right about them! They are so good! And the owner itself took care of my hair! She's so nice and she did a good quality service (served me with hot tea and massage my arm for FREE!)I didnt had any regrets, for now! Kidding! She charged me for 2,700 for my medium hair, 550 for the hair treatment (because she found my hair dry because of coloring my hair), 300 for my hair cut to give volume to my hair since I have very thin hair that's why I want my hair permed! and the conditioner she recommend me Mise En Scene Pearl Shining conditioner for 450. I only got the conditioner because I only have 4K in pocket. Just to make sure that I won't spend too much but I just spent it all. Overall I spent 4,000 yesterday. I am really shocked because she uses a different machine to perm my hair, she uses thermal processor (create swing belle) instead of those ceramic rods digital perm machine. Anyway, I am not worried about it.
Anyway Sunset, I just wanted to ask you if its okay to use Human nature natural smoothing hair serum for permed hair? Im just wondering. And can i find the Giga scalp treatment in watsons? I never got out yet in the house. Im too lazy plus I didnt took shower yet. And she also told me that I can shower my hair but without shampoo, she told me to use the conditioner. I can only use the shampoo after 2 days. Not really sure what to do because as you've written here it needs to leave for 24-48 hours without wetting the hair. So probably salons have different procedure. Oh well. That's ok. I'm gonna take shower tomorrow then.
I forgot to mention the name of the salon its ArtBox Korean Salon, if ever someone will drop by here and wanted to have their hair permed in Dumaguete. ;)
    Have a great day!

    1. Thanks for your comment Ellaine, and thanks for sharing your experiences here. :)

I think you can use the serum even for permed hair, since it will tame the frizziness, which is a main problem with permed hair. As mentioned in the post, Tony and Jackey stylist sold me the serum since my hair is damaged and I find that using the serum really tames the frizziness.

I'm not sure if you can find Giga products in Watson's but if it's not yet available in Dumaguete, I suggest just using any good hair treatment that you find you're hiyang using.

It's also ok to shower but without shampooing---I know that with some perm treatments, it's ok to do that. That's why I said it's important to ask your stylist precise instructions as they will differ depending on the perm treatment/ medicine each stylist/salon uses.

Hope that answers all your concerns. Cheers! :)

    2. Hi Sunset of Goddess!

I am so grateful that I found your blog. It really helps! I really can't wait to have my hair permed since its medium length. But thats okay.
Anyway I bought online the human nature smoothing serum, the giga scalp treatment, human nature moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. I also bought earlier the monea curl defining and finesse curl defining at watsons. I just went shopping today!

You know my hair becomes frizzy today, gosh I hated it! I dont have enough knowledge on how to do it exactly even if I read your blog few times, like the styling and all that. Wish there's a video.

How do curl by the way? and the crimp? I still need a lot to learn about taking care of permed hair.

      Anyway, Thank you! ;-)

    3. As I said, the first few days are actually a trial period for you to get used to your hair and so that you will learn how to style permed hair properly. I haven't tried Monea yet so I don't know the effect. And perhaps it will depend really on your hair. As detailed above, I use Kerastase Oleo curl and I'm quite happy with the product.

Hope you enjoy your perm :)

  59. I have digital perm last July, on the first month, I feel like nagsisi ako, ang hirap i-maintain. As I time goes by,i start enjoying my curls. Now, I'm planning to do digital perm again and try large curl.

Is it ok to re-do my digital perm?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, I had another digi perm done about 5 months after my first perm. It really depends on the quality of your perm and your hair so I think it's best to ask the actual stylist for your 2nd perm and ask if it's ok for your hair to be permed again. :)

  60. Hi! This post is awesome. You should become a fashion consultant/contributor of beauty magazines! ;) I just had my hair permed the traditional way (as in rollers, foil, chemicals in tube. The works) a week ago, and so far I am loving the beach hair look! I haven't really thought of purchasing any post-perm product since I am thaaat low maintenance (another reason why I appreciate having curls- No need to comb/brush haha!), as in super tamad. Reading this post of yours made me realize that I have to take care of these pretty curls if I do not want to lose them agad. Thank you for sharing your insights! ;)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi! I think you're not supposed to tie it because it may ruin the look and quality of your perm. IN any case, always ask your stylist as it may vary depending on the type of perm that you got. :)

    1. Hi Roxanne, Human Nature products are available in Rustan's supermarkets and Beauty Bar. However, the product selection in Rustan's is quite limited. If you want to be able to choose from their full range of products, either order from a Human Nature dealer, order online but pay a minimal shipping fee, or go to their flagship store in Commonwealth (check out my post on it here http://sunsetgoddessmanila.blogspot.com/2012/03/human-natures-flagship-store.html). Please check their website for more information :)

  111. Thank you so much for the tip. It helps me a lot since I had my hair permed yesterday at T&J. But I have a question. Is it normal that after 24 hours of trematment some pieces of the hair are flat?I haven't washed it yet. Please give me some advice. Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I would say it would be quite normal especially as the medicine that they use will take time to settle in. As I've mentioned in above post: "I should mention that your permed hair upon leaving the salon will be quite different from how it will look like after you wash it. And in fact, it's only days after that the "real look" of your digi perm will come out. I loved how my hair looked when I left the salon but I think I really got to appreciate what I did to my hair only after a few days into the perm. That said, if you're not too happy about how your hair looks right after your perm, don't panic! Give it a few days before judging for yourself whether you love it or hate it."
